About Chittagong, Bangladesh

A large port city and the gateway to the pristine Chittagong Hill Tracts, Chittagong often surprises travellers with its range of nearby outdoor activities, including some of Bangladesh’s most popular beaches. Hang around town, and you’ll discover a myriad of unique sights, from a family-friendly theme park to a remarkably central nature reserve.

Things to do in Chittagong

If you’re holidaying in Chittagong with your family, make sure you treat the kids to a day out at Foy’s Lake Amusement World. Centred around an artificial lake, this theme park boasts kid-friendly roller coasters, boat rides, dodgem cars and more family fun. It’s located next to Chittagong Zoo, where you can meet an Indian lion, mugger crocodile, capped langur and other exotic animals.

Pay respect to the Japanese and Allied soldiers who fought and died on the Burma front during World War II at the sombre Chittagong Commonwealth War Cemetery. Venture even further back in Bangladesh’s history at the Ethnological Museum, which displays tools and other exhibits owned by the country’s tribal people.

You don’t need to look far to find tranquil nature in the city, thanks to the central Batali Hill, which offers an easy hiking trail that reveals panoramic city vistas. If you prefer the beach, drive about 14 kilometres south to the calm waters at Patenga beach. You don’t need to pack lunch as there are numerous stalls selling cheap street eats including spicy mud crab and falafel.

Forget the map while wandering through the Central Bazar, a maze of local stores selling cheap clothing and artisan goods. Don’t leave Chittagong without visiting the renowned Chittagong Hill Tracts, a mesmerising expanse of undulating hills, babbling rivers and bamboo jungles that are perfect for hiking.

Getting around Chittagong

Walking is a good option for getting around Chittagong, but you’ll want to use the rickshaws for longer journeys. These pedal-powered taxis are both convenient and offer a bit of local culture. Hire a car or driver for trips outside of the city.
