About Ōta, Gunma Prefecture

Ota is a midsize city in the southeastern part of Gunma Prefecture in the Kanto region. It lies between the Tone and Watarase rivers, located about 80 km north-west of Tokyo. Surrounded by beautiful nature, Ota City boasts lots of parks with excellent flower watching spots, onsen hot spring baths, and unique cuisine.

Local attractions include many historical sites linked to the Nitta clan such as the Nitta-no-sho or Nitta Manor, a Daikon Temple dating from the 17th century, the Kanayama Castle with remains of a castle built in the 15th century on Mt. Kanayama, and the Yabuzuka Onsen, Ota’s hot springs located about 9 km north of the city centre.

Ota can be reached from Tokyo’s Asakusa station via express trains and the journey lasts 70 to 90 minutes and about half an hour on the Joetsu Bullet Train. The journey with local trains require a few transfers and takes a little over two hours.

Ota offers a rich and authentic local flavour, with stories, dishes and lifestyle typical of this region. Its quiet beauty and poise, pride in its history, and the hospitality of the locals charm visitors every time.
