About Biggar

Located on a Roman road that once connected the Clyde Valley with Musselburgh, Biggar is a small town in South Lanarkshire. Evidence suggests that the area has been settled since at least the Iron Age, with the modern town established around a 12th-century motte and bailey castle.

History buffs can visit the Biggar & Upper Clydesdale Museum, which details 14,000 years of life in the region. Learn about the people who have lived and worked here since prehistoric times and see the archaeological findings, period costumes and old photographs on display.

Don’t miss the Biggar Gasworks Museum, which occupies an industrial plant that created coal gas for the community for more than 130 years. Coincide your visit with one of the steam days to see the machinery in action. A short stroll from the museum is the 1546-built Biggar Kirk, which was the last collegiate church founded in Scotland prior to the Reformation.
