With a casino entertainment complex, lively waterfront activities on the Mississippi River and wine tasting in the countryside, there’s plenty of entertainment in Dubuque.

Things to do in Dubuque

Head down to the waterfront to experience the Mighty Mississippi on a paddlewheel boat tour or launch your own canoe or kayak from River’s Edge Plaza. If you’re travelling with young children, stop by the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium to enjoy touch tanks, interactive exhibits and a 1934 steamer.

Spend some time at Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, which cradles thousands of hosta plants as well as roses, water gardens and wildflowers. Hike the Heritage Trail to see limestone bluffs, fossils and railroad artefacts. You can also hit the trails at Mines of Spain State Recreation Area, which takes you past a bird-and-butterfly garden and a historic farm site.

Cable Car Square is home to popular attractions, such as Fenelon Place Elevator. Ride to a bluff overlooking Dubuque, then take a horse-drawn carriage or streetcar ride before browsing the shops, galleries and cafes.

Venture outside the city limits to discover Crystal Lake Cave, about five minutes away, and Park Farm Winery, where you can sample regional wines with sweeping views of the forest and vineyards. Drive about 30 minutes to the “Field of Dreams” movie location, which still has its century-old farmhouse, bleachers and bases.
