About Wernigerode

Wernigerode is a storybook town nestled at the base of the Harz Mountains. Filled with cobbled streets and half-timbered houses, it feels like a scene from a German fairy tale. Get lost in the winding streets of the Old Town, explore the medieval castle and stretch your legs in beautiful Harz National Park.

Things to do in Wernigerode

The medieval Old Town will charm you with its half-timbered houses painted in bright reds, yellows and greens. Many of the centuries-old houses have been reimagined as cosy cafes and bakeries, where you can enjoy local delicacies like “schmandkuchen”, a traditional cake made with sour cream and egg yolks. Stroll along Breite Strasse to admire beautiful heritage buildings like Krummelsches Haus.

Ride the train to Drei Annen Hohne, where you can board the famous Brockenbahn steam train up Mt. Brocken. The narrow-gauge track winds up to the 1,142-metre-high summit and unlocks sweeping views over the surrounding mountains and countryside.

Wernigerode is a great base for day trips to Harz National Park. Well-marked trails wind through the lush spruce and beech forests, with the chance to spot deer, lynx and wild boar. The family-friendly Dandelion Discovery Path takes around two hours to complete. There are also more challenging trails for experienced hikers.

Wernigerode Castle dates back to the 12th century and towers over the Old Town. While it was built in medieval times, you’ll also notice elements of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Visit the castle museum to admire centuries-old oil paintings and antiques. Stroll to the castle from the town centre or climb aboard a traditional horse-drawn cart.
