About Belmopan

Once a sleepy town on the east coast of Belize, Belmopan is now a hubbub of activity, thanks to its bustling central market. The city enjoys a tropical climate and is famous for the surrounding cave systems and picturesque Blue Hole National Park.

Things to do in Belmopan

For a taste of local culture, head to the food market located in the town centre. Here local food vendors set up stalls and serve an array of delicious dishes. Enjoy dining on Mexican and Belize cuisine, including tasty tortillas and fresh bean omelettes.

Just south of the city sits the Blue Hole National Park, 200 hectares of protected land that’s home to two unique cave systems, St. Herman’s Cave and Crystal Cave. Enjoy a day of hiking along nature trails, jumping into jungle pools and bird-spotting amongst the 200 tropical species. Keep your eyes peeled for jaguars, as they’ve been spotted here in the past.

Spend a morning on a guided tour of the remote St Herman’s Cave learning about Mayan ruins. Located inside the National Park, the cave is one kilometre long and is made up of delicate stalactites, stalagmites and Mayan pottery.

Culture vultures and history buffs alike will enjoy a day trip to Actun Tunichil Muknal, a sacrificial burial site located inside a cave system. Spend an afternoon admiring the ceramics, stonework and ancient human remains.
