Nicknamed the “Gibraltar of India”, the towering Gwalior Fort complex is a city icon, comprised of temples and palaces, such as Man Mandir Palace and Gujari Mahal. You can also tour the Siddhachal Caves and various sacred spots within the complex.

One of the most striking features of the fort complex is the thousands of Jain idols carved into rock. Some of the larger Tirthankar images, which represent the 24 great Jain teachers, reach as high as 17 metres. Keep an eye out for the impressive collection in the upper western approach.

Modernisation has brought a thriving nightlife scene to Gwalior, including The Bada Bar, which rests within the Usha Kiran Palace. It serves craft cocktails and expertly prepared cuisine and harbours a century-old grand billiard table. Spreading along the upper floor of Dindayal City Mall, DnD Discotheque cranks out techno tunes and Bollywood hits.

Dining tends to centre around fusion fare and continental dishes with an Indian twist. Chefs at Moti Mahal Delux create North West Frontier cuisine, such as tandoor-baked chicken murg hariyali tikka with spices, coriander, mint and yoghurt. You can sample Nepali, Thai and Marathi specialties on the veranda of the Silver Saloon.
