Explore an exquisite collection of modern and contemporary Russian art at the Mordovian Republican Fine Arts Museum. The museum’s highlights include breathtaking wooden sculptures by world-renowned artist, Stephan Eriza, and the remarkable paintings of Fedot Sychkov.

Tour the magnificent Cathedral of St. Theodore Ushakov, which was built in 2006 and overlooks Pushkin’s Park. The Russian Orthodox cathedral can also hold up to 3,000 people. Influenced by the Byzantine era, the pale-blue temple features a sparkling gold central dome surrounded by several tiered domes. Venture inside to see the precious gold iconostasis and exquisite mosaics.

Don’t miss the Museum of Mordovia Folk Culture, devoted to the preservation of the region’s indigenous culture. Discover a rich collection of historical relics from Mesolithic age through to the 18th century. See ancient tools, traditional clothing, colorful headpieces, elaborate jewelry and kids’ toys.

Retrace the Russian victory over Fascist Germany in the Great Patriotic War with a visit to the Memorial Museum of Military and Labour Feat. Housed in an ultra-modern black-and-orange granite building, the museum’s four exhibition halls commemorate the fallen heroes. You can see original footage, armor and weaponry, including a T-54 Tank.

Getting around

Saransk Airport is a 15-minute taxi or 45-minute bus from the center of town. Trains arrive in Saransk from Ruzayevka and Krasny Uzel. Once in Saransk, buses and taxis are available for transport. However, walking is the most pleasant way to see the city.
