About Tomsk

Tomsk is a university town that attracts students from across Europe and Asia, giving the city a cultured, international feel. It’s home to charming wooden houses, lively cafes, absorbing museums and a laid-back bar scene.

Things to do

The city’s most striking feature is its intricately carved wooden buildings, reminiscent of gingerbread houses and decorated with wooden animals. Admire the elaborate latticework on Peacock House and the Church of St Mary, then browse the exhibitions of carved wooden furniture at the Museum of Wooden Architecture.

More of Tomsk’s history is found at the Memorial Museum, housed in a former KGB building. The exhibits detail the repressive regime of the USSR and display KGB artefacts and memorabilia. You can even walk around inside the old prison cells in the basement.

Tomsk is home to an array of excellent sports facilities. Skiing and snowboarding are popular in the winter, while rowing and volleyball are available during summer. Alternatively, test your skills on the 11-metre-tall climbing wall at Tomsk University.

Feeling a bit chilly? Tomsk is the perfect place to try a banya, a traditional Russian sauna. After sweating it out in the steam room, cool down with a beer at the Underground Jazz Cafe while listening to superb live music.

Getting around

Most attractions in Tomsk are within walking distance of the centre and getting around on foot is the best way to see the ornate wooden houses. Public transport consists of buses, minibuses and trams, which are simple to navigate.
