Where to stay in Volgograd

About Volgograd

The scene of one of the largest battles of World War II, Volgograd unites striking historical monuments with impressive modern engineering. It is an important trade port along the Volga, with broad boulevards and grand public buildings that house museums, galleries and concert halls.

Things to do

The Motherland Calls is Volgograd’s most-famous attraction and the tallest statue in Europe at 85 meters. It commemorates the Battle of Stalingrad, in addition to the Eternal Flame below where you can watch the daily changing of the guard. For detailed historical exhibits, visit the Panorama Museum and see the period military uniforms, armaments and tanks on display.

Kazan Cathedral is a great example of Russian Orthodox architecture, featuring an array of beautiful religious artwork. Volgograd Planetarium has an astronomical observatory and a dome screen for presentations that take you around the universe, while Volgograd Friendship Park features outdoor fountains, cafes and an upside-down house.

Volgograd is where two of Russia’s largest rivers connect through the Volga-Don Canal. It’s an incredible feat of engineering worth seeing for the enormous locks that keep ships moving in the right direction. Guarding the east end of the canal is a 57-metre-tall statue of Lenin delivering a speech.

Getting around

Volgograd Airport is 20 kilometers from the city and has domestic flights from Moscow and St Petersburg, while trains run to Volgograd from major Russian cities. The city boasts an extensive network of buses and light rail. For a historic ride, hop on the Volgograd Metrotram and ride quaint cars from the 1980s around the city.
