The hilltop city of Agrigento is a launchpad to the Province of Agrigento. It’s built around an enchanting medieval Old Town criss-crossed with narrow alleys and filled with elegant palazzi and churches. Most of the action is set along Via Atenea, a lively thoroughfare that cuts through the heart of the Old Town.

Valley of the Temples is one of the most important archaeological sites in Italy. The UNESCO-protected site is dotted with ancient Greek ruins, including the magnificent Tempio della Concordia built in 430 BC. You’ll be awed by the soaring Doric columns and intricate carvings.

Sandy beaches dot the coastline and are perfect for topping up your tan. Find some of the best stretches of sand in Riserva Naturale Torre Salsa, an enormous coastal park fringed by gold-sand beaches like Torre Salsa. There are lots of signposted trails to explore and an excellent visitor centre where you can get more information on the park. Eraclea Minoa is another beautiful beach, surrounded by chalky cliffs and shaded by leafy cypress and eucalyptus trees.

Sciacca has been an active fishing port for centuries and boasts some of the best seafood in Sicily. Try local specialties like swordfish topped with tomatoes and capers, sardines stuffed with toasted breadcrumbs and “nasello alla palermitana” fish cooked with garlic, anchovies and lemon juice.
