About Senja

Located far above the Arctic Circle, Senja is an enchanting island surrounded by scenic fjords and the open waters of the Norwegian Sea. It’s home to colourful fishing villages, sparkling lakes and rugged mountains and is a popular destination for viewing the northern lights.

On the west coast of Senja Island lies Ånderdalen National Park, which boasts a dramatic coastal landscape that’s been carved over thousands of years by glacial forces. Hike between the centuries-old pine trees and explore the bird-filled wetlands, then see the remains of turf huts, bowmen’s hides and sacrificial sites belonging to the indigenous Sami people.

Drive between the picturesque settlements that hug Senja Island’s coastline, including the lively village of Gryllefjord and historic Torsken. Admire the historic chapel of Mefjordvær and soak up the spectacular views of the Gisund Bridge from the eastern hamlet of Silsand.

Getting there

The Gisund Bridge connects Senja Island with the mainland town of Finnsnes while ferries travel between Lysnes and Tromsø. Bardufoss Airport is the main gateway to the island and has regular flights to Oslo. Having your own vehicle is the best way to explore Senja Island.
