About Chinatown

Chinatown is a historic, vibrant district located in Honolulu, Hawaii. It is home to the city’s burgeoning art scene, and a variety of ornate temples, galleries, shops, restaurants and nightclubs. Walk through the charming, colour filled streets and be instantly transported back to ancient China and Japan.

On arrival to Chinatown, discover the historic buildings of the neighbourhood. Walk to the ornate Kuan Yin Temple on the edge of Foster Botanical Garden. The structure dedicated to the bodhisattva of mercy attracts visitors from all over the island. Many arrive to give thanks to the statue and offer fresh fruit and flowers and some burn paper money for good luck and prosperity. Continue to Izumo Taishakyo Mission, one of the few Shinto shrines located in the United States. This beautiful structure is a beacon of serenity away from the hustle and bustle of Chinatown. A more relaxed atmosphere can be found in Foster Botanical Garden, the oldest botanical garden in Hawaii. Visitors can walk the terraces, discover indigenous plant life, admire the orchid display or take refuge under a shady palm tree. Heading back into Chinatown, the streets come alive. Art Galleries beckon passers-by with unusual prints and inks, while herbalists tempt visitors with a cure for all ailments. Chinatown is also one of the most exciting places to dine out in Honolulu. Visitors tempted by eclectic aromas can enjoy dishes from the delicious dim sum to Vietnamese, Eurasian and even Cuban. Nightlife is also dynamic in this neighbourhood, boasting a selection of the hottest underground nightclubs and bars in Honolulu.

Reaching Chinatown from downtown Waikiki or other areas of Honolulu is easy. The area is served by several buses which stop around the perimeter. Visitors can also walk from Aloha Tower and marketplace in around 10 minutes. The area is compact, therefore, walking is a good option for those wishing to explore the local markets, galleries and shrines.

Chinatown was originally frequented by fishermen until the 19th century when labourers travelled from China to work on the island’s sugar plantations. When their contracts ended, many decided to make the area their home. Today, original Oahu market still exists selling fresh produce and fish, with the culture of China thriving in Honolulu. The district has some of the best restaurants, art galleries and nightlife in the city.
