About Field Museum of Natural History

A prominent tribute to science, culture, history and environment, Field Museum of Natural History leads the collective of renowned institutions in Chicago’s lakefront Museum Campus. Its focus on anthropology and geology give birth to fascinating exhibitions with lifelike re-creations of animals and plants in natural environments, spanning centuries of evolution and development.

Visitors from across the globe flock to the Evolving Planet display for a chance to meet 65-million-year-old Sue, the world’s largest and most detailed T. rex dinosaur skeleton discovered to date. Millions of artefacts make history come alive, including ancient human mummies, an Egyptian tomb, rare gemstones from thousands of years ago, tombs, shrines and taxidermy animals from Asia and Africa. Learning adventures and interactive displays include shrinking to the size of a bug in the Underground Adventure lab and learning how to extract DNA and prep fossils.

Field Museum lies in Chicago Park on Lake Shore Drive, south of the downtown area. It’s accessible by car via US 41, and public transportation options include CTA bus, CTA train and Metra Rail. The Chicago lakefront bike trail runs right by the museum, with a Divvy Bike Sharing station on the south-west side, allowing cyclists to pick up and drop off rented bikes at hundreds of stations citywide.

Opening to the public in 1894 in Jackson Park, the Field Museum of Natural History shares its current campus with the Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium, providing a deep-dive into Chicago’s public cultural attractions. Concerts, entertainment and sporting events take place on campus throughout the year as well. The museum bears the name of its founding donor, Marshall Field, famous for his Chicago-based chain of department stores.
