About Kos

Kos Island is an Aegean daydream, with long sandy beaches, turquoise water and a treasure trove of ancient Greek and Roman ruins to discover. Base yourself in postcard-perfect Kos Town, escape to a sun-drenched beach resort or experience the island through a local lens in a mountain village.

Things to do in Kos

The beaches on Kos Island are spectacular, with stretches of sand for every occasion. Built-up beaches like Kardamena, Kefalos and Agios Stefanos are dotted with sun loungers and umbrellas. If you prefer a quieter scene, escape to secluded beaches like Kamari in the south-west corner and Mastihari on the north coast.

Kos Town is built around a jewel-toned harbour and is a great base for exploring the island. The interior is a maze of cobbled streets shaded by bright pink bougainvillea vines. Many of the charming stone townhouses have been reimagined as al fresco cafes and restaurants.

Built in the 15th century, Neratzia Castle towers over the town and commands sweeping views over the harbour and the shimmering Aegean Sea. Ancient Agora is in the heart of Kos Town and is one of the island’s most treasured archaeological sites. Some of the oldest ruins date back to the 2nd-century BC.

Kos is laced with hiking trails that wind through the forested interior. Set on the slopes of Mount Dikaios, the tiny mountain village of Zia is popular with walkers. The village will enchant you with its cobbled lanes, domed churches and traditional blue-and-white houses. A well-worn trail starts in the village and climbs through the pine forest to the summit of Mount Dikaios. Take in the spectacular views, then return to the village for dinner at a traditional taverna.

Getting around Kos

Public buses are a fast and affordable way to explore Kos Island. All towns, resorts and villages on the island, including Kos Town, Kardamena and Kefalos, are pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Kos International Airport is a 25-minute drive from Kos Town.
