About Tegernsee

Tegernsee is a picturesque resort town set on a glacier-formed lake. The Bavarian Alps soar over the lake and create a perfect backdrop to hike and mountain bike in the summer. Winter snowfall transforms Tegernsee into a hub to ski, snowboard and toboggan in a stunning alpine setting.

Things to do in Tegernsee

The lake is warmest in June and July when Tegernsee enjoys blue skies and lashings of sunshine. Choose from several family-friendly swimming beaches swimming, most with soft sand and grass-covered sunbathing lawns. You’ll also find “lido” outdoor swimming pools where you can rent sun lounges and umbrellas.

Hike 1,700-metre-tall Wallberg Mountain to reach a tiny church with sweeping views over the valley and Bavarian Alps. It’s a challenging yet beautiful hike and takes around six hours to complete. In winter, the mountain boasts one of the longest toboggan runs in the country.

Admire paintings by a famous Norwegian artist at the Olaf Gulbransson Museum. The former cartoonist once worked for a German newspaper and gained notoriety for his tongue-in-cheek illustrations. On show are original caricatures and satirical drawings, as well as oil paintings and landscapes.

Getting around Tegernsee

Tegernsee is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. The town is in Bavaria, a 45-minute drive from Munich and one hour by train. The town is on the German Alpine Road tourist drive, which connects Lake Constance and Konigssee. Ferries run between Tegernsee and the neighbourhing lake towns of Bad Wiessee and Rottach-Egern in the summer. Munich International Airport is a 1.5-hour drive away.
