Newark Liberty International is located in New Jersey, 24 kilometres south-west of Midtown Manhattan. The most cost effective way to access the terminals is via AirTrain Newark, which offers links to New Jersey Transit trains bound for both Newark and New York City. Another option is the Newark Airport Express bus, which whisks passengers from Manhattan’s Port Authority Bus Terminal to the airport in just 35 minutes. Car access is also easy, with the airport conveniently located on the New Jersey Turnpike.
While today Newark Liberty International is smaller than counterparts like John F. Kennedy International Airport, it was once America’s only major airport. It first opened in 1928 and was anchored by the beautifully designed Art Deco Newark Metropolitan Airport Administration Building. Today the building is recognised by the National Register of Historic Places and houses a fantastic museum.
