Located around 250 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, Abisko is a tiny village in northern Sweden. It lies on the southwestern shore of picturesque Torneträsk Lake and serves as a gateway to the mountainous landscapes of Abisko National Park.
Explore one of the many hiking trails that wind through Abisko National Park, which was established in 1909. It lies at one end of the King’s Trail, a 440-kilometre-long route that hugs the Scandinavian Mountains south to Hemavan. Abisko National Park provides important habitat for fell lemmings, moose and reindeer, as well as the Lapland marsh orchid.
On the western edge of Abisko National Park is the Aurora Sky Station, which is considered one of the best places in Sweden to view the Northern Lights. Jump aboard a chairlift for the spectacular journey to the top of Mount Nuolja, where you’ll find the observation centre and a fine-dining restaurant.
Getting there
Trains travelling between Stockholm and Narvik stop at the Abisko Östra railway station. Kiruna Airport is 1.5 hours away and has regular flights to Stockholm. The centre of Abisko is small enough to explore on foot while having your own vehicle gives you greater freedom to explore the region.
