About Albenga

Perched on the Gulf of Genoa along the Italian Riviera, the ancient town of Albenga harbours a medieval centre with picturesque plazas and historic structures. Magnificent towers, museums and cathedrals sit alongside fresh Italian seafood eateries on the waterfront.

The original Roman town structure in Albenga remains, with narrow streets and alleys dotted by centuries-old towers. In the heart of the medieval centre you’ll find three imposing towers, as well as the Romanesque-style Cathedral of Saint Michele. Explore the cathedral to see its bell tower and trompe-l'oeil frescoes, including one by 15th-century painters Matteo and Tommaso Biazaci da Brusca.

Next to the cathedral you’ll find the renowned Baptistry, constructed in the 5th century with an octagonal interior and intricate mosaics. View the “Monogram of Christ” on the vault, depicting 12 doves and a star-studded background.

Inside Palazzo Vecchio, you’ll find the Ingauno Museum with remnants and artefacts from the original Byzantine and Roman settlement. The Diocesan Museum lies within Bishop's Palace, filled with 16th-century tapestries and manuscripts, as well as paintings such as “Martyrdom of Saint Catherine” by Guido Reni.
