About Borovets

An alpine resort in the Rila mountains, Borovets has long been famous for its skiing. Originally established as a hunting place for Bulgarian kings, you can now feel like royalty as you enjoy the powdery snow or sip a cocktail in its classy bars.

Things to do in Borovets

The star attraction in Borovets is its skiing and snowboarding. The 58 kilometres of piste cater to both beginners and more advanced skiers, offering short and long runs, cross-country routes and a ski jump. Many of the instructors in the schools are former professional skiers, so it’s also a great place to come and hone your skills.

Visiting in warmer weather? There’s still plenty to explore, with cycling and hiking routes across the Rila mountains and the opportunity to go horseback riding. Iskar Reservoir to the north has kayaking, windsurfing and water-skiing available, or you can fish for trout, pike and carp at the southern end of the lake.

After dark, Borovets has plenty of options for entertainment. Sample local specialities like moussaka, made here with potato instead of aubergine. Taste the national drink, Rakia, in one of the many bars, try your luck in the town’s casino or dance all night in the disco at Hotel Samokov.

Getting around Borovets

Most visitors arrive from the capital, Sofia, a little over 70 kilometres away. The drive takes 80 minutes, but if you’re coming directly from the airport it’s more convenient to take an airport transfer bus. The ski lifts are only a short walk from the centre of town.
