About Brescia

Things to do in Brescia

Santa Giulia occupies an 8th-century monastery and features exhibits on the rich history and heritage of Brescia. The enormous museum includes several buildings filled with Roman artefacts, medieval jewels and centuries-old mosaics.

Brescia Castle boasts a domineering setting atop Cidneo Hill. Approaching the stronghold, you’ll walk across the drawbridge and past the impressive stone tower. Stroll around the castle, take in the panoramic views and check out the weapons and armour on show at the Luigi Marzoli Arms Museum. At the foot of the castle is an award-winning vineyard where you can sample wine and “grappa” Italian brandy.

Brixia Parco Archeologico protects some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in Italy. Within the huge archaeological complex, you can see an ancient Roman temple, theatre and sanctuary decorated with frescoes and mosaics.

The squares and plazas of Brescia are lined with al fresco cafes where you can enjoy strong Italian espresso and take in the street scene. Restaurants serve local specialties from the Lombardy region. Try “cassoeula” pork stew, risotto topped with saffron and “osso buco” veal shanks braised in white wine. Pair your meal with a glass of sparkling from the nearby Franciacorta winemaking region.

Getting around Brescia

Brescia is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot, while light rail trains are a good way to cover longer distances. Dedicated cycle lanes make it easy to get around the city by bike. Trains run between Brescia and Milan in 40 minutes and Malpensa Airport in Milan is a 1.5-hour drive away.
