About Buan

Positioned on a rugged stretch of Yellow Sea coastline, Buan is a rural town and county in North Jeolla. It’s renowned for its renewable energy initiatives, the former home of poet Shin Seok Jeong and a Buddhist temple complex lined with ancient trees.

Things to do

Learn about the life and work of much-loved local poet, Shin Seok Jeong, at the Seokjeong Literary Museum. Some of his most notable poetry collections are on display, together with autographed manuscripts and personal artefacts. Poetry recitations are also held there on a regular basis.

Get a unique insight into Buan’s transformation into a “green city” at the New & Renewable Energy Village. Learn about the thermal energy generating facilities being installed across the country, together with the establishment of South Korea’s first renewable energy park.

Make a day trip to the Korean Buddhist temple of Naesosa, nestled at the base of Naebyeongsan mountain. Its entranceway is lined with large fir trees and two ancient zelkova trees, while a 300-year-old Bodhi tree stands elegantly in front of the temple complex’s Bongnaeru Pavilion.

Also nearby is the Wolmyeongam Hermitage, which has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times since it was established in 692 AD. It boasts magnificent views overlooking the dramatic coastal landscapes of Mount Byeonsan Peninsula National Park and enjoys stunning sunsets over the Yellow Sea.

Getting around

Buan is around three hours by train from Seoul and four hours from Incheon International Airport, with the closest train station in nearby Gimje. The Buan Bus Terminal is the main hub for connections across North Jeolla province and the town is easily explored on foot.
