Where to stay in Cambridge

About Cambridge

Named after the Duke of Cambridge, Prince George, Cambridge is a bustling town on the banks of the Waikato River. It’s clustered with Heritage-listed buildings and home to an excellent museum and is near the Hamilton Gardens and Tree Church of Ohaupo.

Things to do

Stroll along the shores of Lake Karapiro, a scenic reservoir created by the damming of the Waikato River in 1847. It’s a hub for recreational pursuits, such as rowing and kayaking, as well as being the setting for New Zealand’s national waka ama (outrigger canoe) championships.

Soak up the peace and tranquility at the Tree Church in Ohaupo, a 100-seat chapel made from living trees around an iron frame. It’s set within a majestic landscaped garden that’s crisscrossed by walking trails and is home to a medieval-style labyrinth based on the ancient city walls of Jericho.

Delve into the local history at the Cambridge Museum, where artefacts and old photographs detail its establishment as a frontier town after the New Zealand Wars. Follow the Heritage Walk through the centre of Cambridge, stopping to admire the Old Courthouse building and historic Cambridge Post Office.

Make a day trip to explore the lively city of Hamilton, famed for the themed Hamilton Gardens. Visit the traditional Maori Garden and stroll along the peaceful walkways of the Japanese Garden before relaxing with a picnic on the grassy lawns.

Getting around

Cambridge is around 20 minutes’ drive from Hamilton Airport and 25 minutes from the centre of Hamilton. The town is small enough to explore on foot or by bus, while having your own vehicle is best for accessing the surrounding sights.
