Walk in the footsteps of kings, lords and Viking rulers in Castletown, the former Isle of Man capital. Things to do in Castletown

Castle Rushen towers over Castletown and recalls the island’s past as a Viking stronghold. The medieval castle is one of the best-preserved in the world and commands spectacular views over the coast. Walk through the cavernous Great Hall, tour the medieval kitchens and descend into the gloomy dungeons.

Get up to speed on local history at the Nautical Museum. Peggy, an armed schooner built in the late 1700s, is the museum’s showpiece. Nearby is the Old Grammar School, a whitewashed chapel built in 1200 AD and repurposed as a school in the 16th century.

Watch historical members of parliament debate hot topics at the Old House of Keys. The 19th-century building is beautifully restored and offers a fascinating glimpse of the Manx Parliament in action. Join in as costumed actors discuss issues like “should women get the vote” in the debating chamber.

Enjoy lunch at a charming pub in the town centre. Dine on a sun-drenched terrace or warm up by a log fireplace if the weather’s not cooperating. Try local dishes like “spuds and herring” served with sliced onion and “queenies” scallops seared in butter and Manx Loaghtan lamb.
