About Chaozhou

Located in the easternmost part of the Guangdong Province, Chaozhou has a 2,000-year-old history highlighted through historic landmarks and cultural attractions. A significant city on the Maritime Silk Road, Chaozhou boasts a bridge made of boats, a 200-year-old temple, and a picturesque crater lake.

Things to do in Chaozhou

Walk across the ancient Guangji Bridge, one of the four ancient bridges in China. It features 24 towers, stone pillars and 18 floating boats that were used to protect Chaozhou from flooding in the Han River.

For a dose of culture, visit the Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou’s city center. Admire the big bronze bell at the 200-year-old temple, then browse the beautiful carvings in the Great Hall, which depict scenes from Buddhist stories.

Head to Phoenix Heaven Lake, a natural crater lake, for leisurely strolls and a chance to explore Prince Cave, the God Well and Peace Temple. You can also visit Yi Garden to browse a museum and art gallery showcasing the work and life of Rao Zongyi, a famous artist in Chaozhou.

Built in the Song dynasty, the Ancient Memorial Archway is the centerpiece of the city’s bustling commercialism. Walk under the archway, then browse the array of shops along Paifang Street. Stop in restaurants serving traditional delicacies, such as spring pancakes, salted cakes, and fermented bean curd cakes.

Getting around Chaozhou

Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport is a 20-kilometer drive from Chaozhou’s city center, while Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is a four-hour drive away. The Shenzhen to Shanghai high-speed rail also has a stop in Chaozhou. Chaozhou’s city center is walkable, but buses and taxis are best for traveling further afield.
