Things to do in Charleston

The Charleston State Capitol building dominates the skyline of the city, with its classical antiquity-inspired design by Cass Gilbert. The dome soars even higher than that of the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C and is entirely covered with 23.5-karat gold leaf, with an immense chandelier suspended from its interior.

Delve into the natural and cultural history of the state at the West Virginia State Museum where prehistoric artefacts, an original settler’s cabin and videos showcasing West Virginia’s diverse landscapes are on display. Experience the coal mining heritage in a simulated mine and peruse the artworks and sculptures by local masters.

Experience the modern buzz of Charleston in the East End Historic District, which is clustered with Heritage-listed buildings and colourful street art. It's here that the Capitol Market takes place, with fresh vegetables, meats, cheeses and flowers from across the region showcased in a vintage freight station.

Escape to the scenic hiking and mountain biking trails of Kanawha State Forest, which sprawls to the south of Charleston. It’s popular amongst birdwatchers for its sightings of wood warblers and is also home to shady picnic areas and a children’s playground.
