About Chernihiv

Renowned for its underground churches, Chernihiv is an ancient city centred around Dytynets Park. In addition to the historic Transfiguration Cathedral and the Cathedral of Boris and Gleb, it’s home to a sprawling green oasis.

Things to do in Chernihiv

Visit the impressive circa-1649 Trinity Monastery, which features green onion domes. Afterwards, check out the adjacent St. Anthony of Kiev Caves, where the underground churches and tunnels are home to centuries-old tombs and ornate frescoes.

The oldest building in Chernihiv is the whitewashed Transfiguration Cathedral, which is one of only a few structures to have survived the Mongol invasions in the 1230s. Be awed by its ornate 19th-century exterior, which blends Byzantine and Roman architecture and is topped by golden spires and domes.

Don’t miss the ancient Cathedral of Boris and Gleb, famed for its silver gilt Royal Doors and mosaic floors. It’s a classic example of 12th-century Chernihiv architecture, with a single dome and relief ornamentations depicting birds and griffins.

Travelling with kids? Spend an afternoon in the riverfront Park Miskyi Sad. It boasts a children’s playground and a selection of family-friendly rides, as well as horseback riding excursions along leafy trails.

Getting around Chernihiv

Kyiv Zhuliany International Airport is around two hours’ drive south of Chernihiv and regular trains make the 3.5-hour journey from Kiev. Buses and trolleybuses travel throughout the city, while the historic centre is best explored on foot.
