About Chico

Serving as the cultural and economic hub of the northern Sacramento Valley, Chico is a lively city in Butte County. It has been nicknamed the “City of Trees” due to the immense green space of Bidwell Park that stretches east from its downtown area. In addition to countless hiking trails and a creekside swimming hole, Chico boasts museums that will appeal to all ages.

Things to do in Chico

On the edge of Downtown Chico is Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park, which preserves the former home of pioneering couple John and Annie Bidwell. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the pink-tinged residence can be explored on guided tours. After your visit, you can refresh with a swim at the One Mile Recreation Area’s Sycamore Pool, hike along the woodland trails of Bidwell Park or take advantage of its fishing lake and a golf course.

Travelling with kids? They’ll love getting hands-on in the Discovery Room of the Gateway Science Museum and playing in the adjacent Native Plant Pollinator Garden. Also not to miss is the National Yo-Yo Museum, which boasts the world’s largest collection of yo-yos, including one that weighs 116 kilograms.

On the southern outskirts of Chico is the Patrick Ranch Museum, which celebrates the rich agricultural heritage of the region. In addition to its 1877-built Glenwood Farmhouse, the property features several historic barns and antique machinery. Inside the farmhouse, you’ll find furnishings, decorative arts and artefacts collected by the former ranch owners, Hester and William Patrick.

Getting around Chico

Chico is around an hour’s drive from Yuba City and 1.5 hours from Sacramento International Airport, which has flights to destinations across North America. The Coast Starlight train connects to the Chico railway station and buses travel throughout the city.
