About Cleburne

Serving as the seat of Johnson County, Cleburne is a historic city south of Dallas-Fort Worth. It is named after Patrick Cleburne, an Irish-born general who served in the Confederate States Army and was the site of a German POW camp during World War II.

Things to do in Cleburne

On the north shore of Pat Cleburne Lake is the Chisholm Trail Outdoor Museum, which encompasses historic buildings and the Big Bear Native American Museum. Learn about the area’s Indigenous heritage while browsing the artefacts on display, then admire the oldest log courthouse in Texas. Also within the complex are a 19th-century blacksmith shop and a mule barn, plus a stagecoach that appeared in several John Wayne films.

If you’re a fan of vintage cinema, don’t miss the Gone With The Wind Museum, which boasts one of the world’s largest collections of memorabilia from the film. In addition to original costumes and a bonnet worn by Scarlett O’Hara, it features props and call sheets from the production. Learn about the author of “Gone With The Wind”, Margaret Mitchell, and how the film won 10 Academy Awards.

Nearby is the Cleburne Sports Complex, which is home to basketball courts, soccer fields and softball diamonds. On the other side of the city is Cleburne State Park where you can go hiking, mountain biking or fishing in the spring-fed waters of Cedar Lake. In addition to white-tailed deer and armadillos, the park provides habitat for coyotes and beavers.
