Where to stay in Abu Dhabi

About Abu Dhabi

From world-class museums to ultra-modern skyscrapers, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is brimming with history, culture and Bedouin charm. Backing onto the shimmering Persian Gulf, it offers traditional shisha cafes, a breezy corniche and bustling souqs.

Things to do

Built by the first president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture. It dwarfs worshippers with marble domes, pillars and soaring minarets studded with precious gemstones, mother-of-pearl inlays and ceramic mosaics.

Falcons play an important role in Gulf culture. There's no better place to discover their significance than the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. You can tour the museum, peer into the examination room, visit the free-flight aviary and meet the magnificent birds of prey.

Ever wanted to run your hands over the hood of a Formula 1 race car? Don't miss Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, an indoor theme park where you can admire luxury sports cars, watch live shows and ride Formula Rossa, the world's fastest rollercoaster.

Nothing captures the spirit of the UAE quite like Emirates Palace. With over 100 domes and more than 1,000 crystal chandeliers, it's one of the most luxurious hotels on the planet. Take a stroll around the lobby, splurge on high tea in the foyer, sip on cocktails at the sleek Hakkasan bar or enjoy a high-end meal at Mezlai.

Getting around

Abu Dhabi is serviced by an efficient network of buses that runs to most major sights and attractions. Taxis are also a fast and affordable way to get around the city. Rental cars will give you the freedom to explore the Emirate of Abu Dhabi at your own pace.

Fed by natural underground springs, Liwa is a large oasis. It sits on the cusp of the Empty Quarter, the world's largest continuous sand desert. The mighty Tel Moreeb rises almost 300 metres high and is one of the tallest sand dunes on the planet. The best way to explore the Empty Quarter is on a 4WD or quad bike tour.

Built from mud bricks and straw, the Liwa Forts are around 300 years old. Walk around the ancient strongholds and learn about how Liwa's tribes defended themselves. The Liwa Forts are particularly beautiful at sunset when they acquire a golden glow.

On the far western coast of Al Gharbia is Sir Bani Yas Island. It was founded by Sheikh Zayed and is dominated by the Arabian Wildlife Park. Nature walks are a great way to spot gazelles, eagles, flamingos, dolphins, dugongs and rare Arabian oryx.

One of Al Gharbia's top attractions is the Emirates National Auto Museum. Inside you'll find a huge collection of over 200 cars including rugged off-road vehicles, American classics and the world's largest truck. Fans of “Top Gear” may recognise some cars that were featured on the TV show.

Getting around Abu Dhabi

The best way to explore Al Gharbia is with a rental car or by hiring a private driver. Liwa is around 250 kilometres from Abu Dhabi, with the drive taking approximately 2.5 hours. Local buses also make the trip and depart from Mezairaa Bus Station.
