Things to do in Ericeira
Praça da República is the beating heart of Ericeira’s Old Town. Cobbled streets spill onto the tree-lined plaza, which is dotted with shops and cafes. There are lots of historic gems to discover in the Old Town, including the Baroque-style Church of São Pedro and Capela da Boa Viagem built in the 15th century. The whitewashed façade looks striking against the cobalt-blue Atlantic Ocean.
Watch surfers ride monster waves on Praia Ribeira d'Ilhas, one of the best surfing beaches in the world. The beach is a World Surfing Reserve and hosts international competitions throughout the year. Above the beach is Miradouro Ribeira d'Ilhas, a scenic lookout with eye-popping views over the Atlantic Ocean.
Swim, sunbathe and learn to surf on Praia do Sul Ericeira. The family-friendly beach features toffee-coloured sand, clean water and beginner-friendly waves. Cool off in the ocean or take a dip in the saltwater swimming pool that overlooks the beach.
From laid-back “marisqueira” seafood restaurants to upmarket bistros, you’ll find dining options for every occasion in Ericeira. Seafood features heavily on most menus. Try local specialties like “ouriços” purple sea urchins, “santola” crabs and “lavagante” lobsters. The most atmospheric restaurants feature chequered tablecloths and walls decorated with fishing nets and buoys.
Getting around Ericeira
Ericeira is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Local buses are an easy and affordable way to visit different beaches. Rental cars offer the freedom to visit Ericeira and explore the region at your own pace. Ericeira is a 45-minute drive from Lisbon and 30 minutes from Humberto Delgado Airport.
