One of the most iconic and important landmarks in Riga, the towering Freedom Monument honours soldiers who lost their lives during the Latvian War of Independence. The 42-metre-tall statue is adorned with detailed sculptures and reliefs showcasing various parts of Latvian culture and important historical moments.
While there are various elements to the Freedom Monument, the most eye-catching feature is the uppermost statue, a copper figure of Liberty raising three gilded stars above her head. Located near the Old Town of Riga, the Freedom Monument has been the site of numerous public demonstrations and ceremonies throughout the years.
When you visit the Freedom Monument, you’ll notice the uniformed and armed guards standing at its front. These are the Guard of Honor and they stand watch over the Freedom Monument, changing every hour during a ceremony. From the Freedom Monument, you can walk to the nearby National History Museum of Latvia and Museum of the Occupation of Latvia.
Getting there
The Freedom Monument is just outside the Old Town of Riga, about 10 minutes’ walk from the Riga train station. You can drive there in about 15 minutes from Riga International Airport.
