About Hillerød

When it comes to quintessential European citadels, Hillerod is a competitive contender. The lively market town is anchored by the glorious Frederiksborg Castle, which has been a seat of Danish kings for centuries. Perched in the middle of the city’s lake, Hillerod is a Renaissance castle with red brickwork, baroque gardens and towering spires. It’s also home to the fascinating Danish Museum of National History.

Frederiksborg Castle may steal the spotlight, but it’s not the only attraction on offer. Hillerod is brimming with culture and serves up a vibrant mix of music, art, theatre and film. For visitors, the pretty pedestrianised streets of the old town are an ambient place to wine, dine, shop and people watch.

Just 30-kilometres north of Copenhagen, Hillerod is both an easy day trip, as well as a wonderful place to spend a night or two. It’s a short drive from the capital, and an easy train ride. Once in town, the train station is a 500-metre stroll from the centre. In addition to its connections to Copenhagen, Hillerod is also a jumping point to Denmark’s northern beaches.

When selecting a spot for his castle, Christian IV didn’t compromise on location. To the north,Hillerod is bordered by the beautiful forests of Gribskov, with Store Dyre have park lying further south. For visitors wanting to explore the wider Hillerod municipality, setting up base in the city and day tripping to lakes, villages and woodlands is a fantastic option.
