Where to stay in Hood River

About Hood River

Nestled on the Columbia River, Hood River is a port town home to arts and food festivals and over 24 sites on the National Register of Historic Places. Considered the “windsurfing capital of the world”, Hood River is also a popular spot for outdoor adventurers looking for mountain biking trails, wineries and scenic hikes.

Things to do

Hood River is all about embracing Oregon’s enthralling outdoors, so venture down to the Hood River Waterfront Park for a swim at the crescent-shaped beach or picnic on the grass. The neighbouring Hood River Event Site is where most people go windsurfing or paddle out in kayaks.

Do you enjoy tasting new wines? Tick off some of Hood River’s most notable wineries, such as Viento Wines, where 30 years of winemaking traditions produces soft, fruity wines. Afterwards, seek out some retail therapy within the Downtown Historic Shopping District. Here you can browse through boutiques, designer stores, antique shops and art galleries housed in heritage buildings.

Speaking of history, visit the town’s oldest house, the Ezra L. Smith home, that was built in 1886. It’s now home to Stoltz Vineyards, where you can enjoy wine tastings. For some culture, head over to The International Museum of Carousel Art, which houses about 110 carved carousel animals, chariots and a Wurlitzer band organ.

Adrenalin junkies can hire a mountain bike and take on the thrilling downhill trails in the Post Canyon Bike Trail System. If you want something more laid back, stroll along the Hood River Waterfront Trail, which takes you past the Columbia River.

Getting around

Hood River is about one hour’s drive from Portland International Airport and can be reached on Greyhound buses from Dallas and Portland. You can walk around Hood River’s historic centre, rent bicycles for touring the township or use a private car to explore the surrounding region.
