Where to stay in Iztacalco, Mexico City

About Iztacalco

A blend of history and modern attractions, Iztacalco is a prominent borough of Mexico City situated just east of the historic city centre. This former island community is remarked for its cozy tree-lined streets and ornately decorated cathedrals.

Things to do

Take a trip back in time as you wander around the famous Constitution Square, also known as the Zócalo. The square contains the lavish Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral and the Tabernacle, with a white stone interior that serves as a stark contrast to the cathedral. In addition, you will find plentiful shopping throughout its department stores and a variety of restaurants for dining.

After leaving Constitution Square, travel to the eastern end for a memorable visit to the National Palace. This location serves as the current working offices for the Mexican President, Federal Treasury and National Archives. The interior boasts vibrant murals painted by Diego Rivera and the exterior offers exquisite gardens decorated with fountains and chapels.

When you want to do some leisurely shopping, La Lagunilla market is one of the largest markets in the city, home to many traditional handicraft stalls and vendors selling souvenirs. Enjoy mulling through vintage clothing and furniture, sample flauta at one of the popular food stalls or try your taste buds on a Tlacoyo corn patty.

Leave the urban atmosphere behind and retreat for a few hours into Chapultepec Forest, Latin America’s largest city park. Get a breath of fresh air as you wander around lovely lakes and ponds, visit the zoo or one of the area’s many amusement parks.

Getting around

Public transportation is the best way to get around Iztacalco either by metro, bus or taxi. As attractions are a close distance from each other, much of the region can be explored on foot. The Internacional Benito Juarez Airport is situated about three kilometres away, making for easy access to and from destinations abroad.
