Where to stay in Jinhu Township

About Jinhu Township

Translating as “golden lake”, Jinhu is an urban township south-east of Kinmen Island, which lies just off the coast of China. It’s dominated by the 253-metre-high summit of Mount Taiwu and is home to several fascinating museums that explore the island’s military and artistic history.

Things to do

Jinhu Township is home to one of Kinmen’s most impressive architectural landmarks, the Chen Jinglan Western-style Mansion. Built in 1917 by a local businessman, it was used as a military hospital during World War II. Admire the fine carvings and archways on the mansion’s whitewashed exterior, then step inside to learn about life here for its previous occupants.

If you’re interested in Taiwan’s military history, pay a visit to the August 23 Artillery Battle Museum, which explores the events of the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis. It exhibits air fighter jets and amphibious landing craft used during the battle, as well as historic charts, documents and artefacts. Framing the entrance to the museum are the names of the servicemen who lost their lives during the battle.

For sweeping panoramas across Jinhu Township, follow the hiking trail that leads to the Taiwu Shan Scenic Spot, which marks the highest point on Kinmen Island. There are several cultural attractions along the way, including the inscribed rock known as Wu Wang Zai Ju and the elaborately decorated Haiyin Temple. It's said that the ringing of the temple’s 750-kilogram bell can be heard up to 30 kilometres away.

Getting around

Jinhu Township is around 15 minutes’ drive from Kinmen Airport, which has flights to destinations across Taiwan. Buses travel throughout the township while renting a car gives you greater freedom to explore the region. Four different hiking trails access the summit of Mount Taiwu.
