Where to stay in Kawazu

About Kawazu

Spreading along the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula, Kawazu faces the Pacific Ocean and Sagami Bay, while the Amagi Mountains tower in the distance with bubbling hot springs. Kawazu also boasts golden beaches, picturesque islands and dozens of seafood eateries.

Things to do

Hiking trails abound in Kawazu, leading to mountain forests and cascading waterfalls. The most popular hike is to the seven waterfalls known collectively as Kawazu Nanadaru, made famous by Nobel Prize-winning author Yasunari Kawabata. Keep an eye out for bronze statues and references to his well-known story, “The Dancer of Izu”.

Rest weary muscles in the onsen hot springs at Yugashima-onsen Hot Spring near the old passage to Joren-no-taki waterfall. While soaking in the onsen, you’ll have magnificent views of the tumbling falls. Amagiso Spa offers a chance to soak in a cave-and-drum onsen, followed by a guided forest walk.

Head to Shimoda for sunning and swimming at warm sandy beaches. Surfers and water sports aficionados flock to Shirahama Beach, while families enjoy the shallow waters of Sotoura Beach. Young travellers also love visiting Shimoda Aquarium to see enormous sea turtles and afternoon sea-lion shows.

Island hopping gives access to smaller islands near Kawazu, including Niijima, which is a popular surfing spot. Head to Hachijojima Island for seasonal whale watching or snorkel at Oshima Island. When the sun sets, return to the main peninsula for dining on fresh seafood, such as red snapper, sea snails and sashimi accompanied by Izu-style wasabi.

Getting around

You can rent a car at various locations on Izu Peninsula, including Shimoda, about 15 minutes’ drive from Kawazu. The Tokai bus network covers the peninsula, as do taxis and bicycle hire companies.
