About Les Vans

Serving as a gateway to Monts d’Ardeche Natural Regional Park, Les Vans is a picturesque commune in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southern France. It’s home to vibrant produce and craft markets and beautiful old buildings, while it also serves as a base for hiking, caving and kayaking.

Things to do in Les Vans

Spend an afternoon exploring the historic centre of Les Vans, which is clustered with buildings that date from the 16th to 19th centuries. Delve into the local history at the charming Musee des Vans and see the walnut retablo housed within the Church of Saint-Pierre. Around the Place du Marche, you’ll find plenty of eateries, including L’Olivo and Restaurant Le Grangousier.

A short drive west of Les Vans is the hamlet of Naves, which is considered one of the most beautiful medieval villages in France. Despite being much older, it flourished in the 19th century on the back of the silk farming industry. Wander along its cobblestone streets and step inside the Romanesque-style Church of Saint-Jacques, which dates back to the 12th century.

In the summer months, you can refresh with a swim at the riverside beach of Chassagnes before visiting the Hermitage of Saint-Eugène. Built atop a limestone cliff overlooking the Chassezac River, it’s centred around a chapel that dates back to the Middle Ages. Coincide your visit with a Mass to see the interior of the chapel and its Byzantine-style frescoes.
