About Masaya, Nicaragua

Masaya is a creativity-fuelled town surrounded by dramatic volcanic landscapes. It’s a gateway to Masaya Volcano National Park, where you can walk on lava fields and peer into enormous craters. The lively town centre features cafes, restaurants and a famous artisan market where you can buy one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

Things to do in Masaya

Parque Central, a bustling square surrounded by colonial buildings, is the beating heart of Masaya. Relax under the shade of a leafy tree and watch street performers entertain the crowds. Catedral de la Asunción soars over the square and features a simple yet elegant façade.

You’ll find everything from hand-painted ceramics to intricate wood carvings at Mercado de Artesanias. The bustling market is a treasure trove of Nicaraguan craftsmanship and packed with stalls selling colourful textiles, handmade jewellery and woven hammocks. It’s a great place to engage with local artisans and learn more about traditional skills passed down for generations.

The unique geology of Nicaragua is on full display in Masaya Volcano National Park. Masaya Volcano, known as the “Mouth of Hell” by locals, towers over the park and is often engulfed in billowing sulphur clouds. Join a guided tour to climb the volcano and peer into the crater. Night tours offer a chance to see red-hot lava.
