About Montaione

Perched atop a green hill in the heart of Tuscany, Montaione is an atmospheric medieval town south-west of Florence. Its historic core is clustered with beautiful old churches and a fascinating museum that details Montaione’s long history as a centre for glass-making.

Things to do in Montaione

A short drive south of Montaione is the San Vivaldo Monastery, which comprises 18 chapels that correspond to the sites of the Holy Land in the late 15th century. Also known as the “Jerusalem of Tuscany”, it was established in the early 14th century following the death of the Franciscan hermit Vivaldo Stricchi. Cultural events take place here throughout the year while classical music concerts are held in the summertime.

Golfers can take advantage of the Castelfalfi Golf Club’s two courses, which are framed by vineyards, olive groves and lakes. In addition to the 18-hole Mountain course, there is the 9-hole Lake course. Both courses were remodelled by Wilfried Moroder and Rainer Preissmann, based on the original designs of Pier Luigi Mancinelli. Spectacular views across the fairways and surrounding countryside can be enjoyed from the clubhouse.

Nearby is the Castelfalfi Adventure Park where you’ll find challenging ropes courses, swinging bridges and a climbing wall. Coincide your visit with one of the impressive falconry displays or learn what it takes to survive in the wild. If you’re a lover of horses, head north to the Italian Horse Protection Association, which provides a sanctuary for mistreated animals.
