Where to stay in Montreux

About Montreux

Framed by the snow-covered Swiss Alps and tucked into Lake Geneva Bay, Montreux has a history of hosting profound literary and musical artists, such as Lord Byron, the Shelleys and Freddie Mercury. Their work is littered with references to this magical land of castles, gardens, fortresses and picturesque trains chugging past ancient forests and Swiss chalets.

Things to do

Chateau de Chillon, also known as Chillon Castle, is the most recognisable landmark in Montreux, towering like a fairy-tale palace on the edge of Lake Geneva. The four-kilometre Chemin Fleuri floral pathway leads to a labyrinth of courtyards surrounding the 13th-century castle with its medieval frescoes and Gothic dungeons featured in Lord Byron’s poem “The Prisoner of Chillon”.

You can wander the quaint hilltop Old Town of Montreux, stopping at small shops, markets and cafes. Feel like taking a steep wooded hike down to the lake? Follow the trails from Old Town leading along the river La Baye de Montreux from the Gorges du Chauderon.

At Lake Geneva, take a ferry to Evian-les-Bains as the lake crosses the border into France. Alternatively, take a Golden Pass Panoramic train around the lake and countryside to see timeless Swiss villages or ride to the Rochers-de-Naye mountain and view the lake from above.

Stop by Queen: The Studio Experience, an exhibit at Montreux Mountain Studios where the rock band Queen recorded many of their famous hits. You’ll see handwritten lyrics, photographs and memorabilia. Pay your respects at the Freddie Mercury statue near the covered market along the waterfront.

Getting around

The transportation network in Montreux includes buses, trains, taxis and ride-share companies. You can also rent a car, bicycle or motorbike for exploring the region. The scenic Golden Pass Line runs between Montreux, Gstaad and the Bernese Oberland, with connections to Lucerne.
