About Near East University

Near East University can be found nestled in the suburbs of Nicosia, Northern Cyprus. The university is home to Atatürk Culture and Congress Centre, the largest concert hall in Northern Cyprus. It is also well known for ground-breaking research facilities, the Grand Library and its three fascinating museums.

One of the most interesting museums to visit within the campus is the Museum of Classical and Sports Cars of Near East University. With over 140 vehicles on display, it offers visitors the chance to learn about the features and history of each car. It is an important museum for the university, as it produced the RA 25 car powered by solar energy in 2014. Visitors can also explore the nearby Communications and Art Museums or the Herbarium Centre. The latter consists of over 5,200 flora samples, displaying endemic species from the region. Those wishing to partake in research during their travels will find everything they need in the Grand Library. It is home to over a million printed materials and 150 million electronic resources. The campus is also home to a Supercomputer, which ranks 13th in the world. It assists with research and works in the fields of health sciences, astronomy, chemistry, physics and mathematics. The university holds a Spring Fest each year in the vast campus park. Concerts, sporting events, dance festivals and board games take place which everyone can enjoy. Park Near East is also a venue for summer rock and pop concerts.

The easiest way to reach Near East University is by car. The journey time from Nicosia takes around 30 minutes. The university organises buses which transfer students to other campuses, and from the city centre, airport or nearby seaports.

Near East University was founded in 1988 by Dr.Suat İ. Günsel, a Turkish Cypriot entrepreneur and educator. The renowned Faculty of Medicine opened later, in 2008. The university has made groundbreaking discoveries having built its own solar powered car which took part in the South African Solar Challenge. It also offers a Nuclear Medicine Research Centre and participates in the Help Conquer Cancer project. In the field of sciences, the university is one of the collaborators from over 100 countries on the Large Hadron Collider research project. Visitors to Nicosia will find spending time exploring the campuses and their research programmes a fascinating experience.
