About Norcia

Norcia is an enchanting town hidden behind ancient city walls. The town is a gateway to Umbria, a tantalising pocket of Italy famous for food, wine and postcard-perfect scenery. Stroll around the historic town centre, try the town’s legendary pork products and hunt for “black gold” truffles in the surrounding countryside.

Things to do in Norcia

Basilica di San Benedetto is one of several medieval buildings that frame the main piazza. Most of the church was destroyed in a recent earthquake, however the façade stands tall and is as beautiful as ever. The piazza is anchored by a statue of Saint Benedict, one of Italy’s most beloved patron saints.

Take your pick of nature-based activities offered by local tour operators. Hunt for truffles in sun-dappled forests or get your pulse racing with a white water rafting adventure on the Corno River. Hiking and cycling are both great options if you want to explore Umbria independently.

Norcia is set in Monti Sibillini National Park, a wild and remote pocket of Italy where you can discover flower-filled alpine pastures and azure lakes. From leisurely strolls to multi-day treks, there are hikes for every age, interest and fitness level. Look for wildlife, including deer, wild boar and golden eagles. On clear days, views from summits reach all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

From Michelin-starred restaurants to rustic trattorias, Norcia is a gastronome’s paradise. Enjoy enormous bowls of “strangozzi” pasta topped with shaved black truffle and braised lentils cooked in a rich white wine broth. The town is famous for its artisan pork products, which you’ll see sold at “macelleria” butchers. Peer inside to see a cornucopia of salami, pancetta, prosciutto and other cured meats. Cooking classes teach you how to make your favourite Umbrian dishes from scratch.

Getting around Norcia

Norcia is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. The town is a 1.5-hour drive from Perugia and 45 minutes from Spoleto, where the closest train station is located. Rental cars offer the freedom to visit Norcia and explore Umbria at your own pace. Norcia is 2.5 hours from Rome by car or train.
