About North Charleston

Sprawling between the Cooper and Ashley rivers, North Charleston is one of the largest cities in South Carolina. It lies directly north of Charleston on land that was historically dominated by rice and indigo plantations. Many of these were subdivided into smaller farms in the 19th century before North Charleston was incorporated as a city in 1972.

Designed to resemble a traditional firehouse is the North Charleston Fire Museum, which exhibits an impressive collection of antique vehicles and firefighting equipment. There are several interactive and hands-on exhibits to explore, including a fire pole, and the museum hosts theatrical experiences complete with live smoke.

The North Charleston Fire Museum is located alongside the Tanger Outlets Charleston, where you’ll find discount stores from some of your favourite brands. Surrounding the mall are numerous fast-food eateries where you can grab a bite to eat, including Buffalo Wild Wings and Chipotle Mexican Grill.

Overlooking the Cooper River is a peaceful meadow framed by grand oak trees that are protected as Riverfront Park. It occupies the site of the former Charleston Naval Base and is surrounded by historic residences that were once home to officers. Riverfront Park provides the setting for outdoor concerts and cultural events, including the annual National Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition.
