About Ostróda

One of the largest towns in Masuria, Ostroda lies on the shores of Lake Drwęca in northern Poland. It was largely established by the Teutonic Order to control a settlement of Baltic Prussians and was named after the town of Osterode am Harz in Lower Saxony. Following the Battle of Eylau in 1807, Ostroda’s centuries-old castle served as a headquarters for Napoleon I.

Things to do in Ostróda

Watching over the mouth of the Drwęca River is Ostroda Castle, which was originally constructed in the 14th century and has been rebuilt numerous times since. During World War II, it was burned down by the Wehrmacht Army and later reconstructed to house a cultural centre. Learn about the castle’s tumultuous past in the small museum and browse the contemporary art exhibits before shopping for gifts in the souvenir store.

Scenic views across Lake Drwęca are on offer from the Ostroda Mall, a waterfront recreational area dominated by a wooden pier. You can walk or cycle on the lakefront trail, cool off in the fountain square or grab a pizza and ice cream. Around the bay lies Plaża Miejska, a family-friendly beach with a volleyball net and watercraft rentals.

Coincide your visit with a soccer match at the MKS Sokol Ostroda stadium or enjoy a swim at the adjacent Aquapark. It forms part of the Galeria Mazurska shopping mall, where you’ll find international fashion brands, fishing stores and a well-stocked supermarket. Also within the complex is a ten-pin bowling alley and a gym.
