Pickering is a nautical city on the shore of Lake Ontario, where some of Canada’s most significant historic sites sit alongside engaging museums, quality restaurants and contemporary shopping malls. Active travellers can get out and explore the shores of Lake Ontario by cycling or strolling the Waterfront Trail. It comprises a series of interconnected trails leading past waterfront parks perfect for a picnic stop. Alternatively, venture into the verdant landscapes of Rouge National Urban Park, where a sandy beach, lush forests and undulating hills offer a great environment for swimming, hiking, canoeing and fishing.

The nearby Rouge River is another popular fishing spot, known for its salmon and riverside hiking trails. It’s surrounded by a range of championship golf courses, including the Angus Glen Golf Club, which features regular tournaments on its immaculate North and South courses. You can also practice your swing on the driving range or visit the on-site Silo Grill for gourmet meals.

Looking for some retail therapy? Head to the Pickering Town Centre, a sprawling shopping mall with big-name brands and a large food court. Don’t miss the weekend Pickering Markets, which houses more than 500 vendors selling antiques, handmade clothing and international fare.

During winter, venture north to one of the nearby ski resorts, such as Dagmar Ski Resort, which has groomed beginner and expert runs. Don’t forget about the Pickering Museum Village, which lets you travel back to a pioneering village filled with old workshops and houses and boasts costumed guides.

Getting around

Pickering is about 35 minutes’ drive from Toronto, where you can fly into Toronto Pearson International Airport. Pickering is serviced by trains from Pickering GO station and public buses. You can also use taxis or a hire car to get around.
