Where to stay in Pingtung County

About Pingtung County

Home to Taiwan’s oldest and largest national park, Pingtung County overlooks the Pacific Ocean at the island’s southern tip. It encompasses rugged mountains and tropical coral reefs, as well as sprawling wax apple orchards, culturally rich temples and a national marine life museum.

Things to do

From the wild landscapes and bustling night market of Kenting to the seafaring folklore of the Donglong Temple, Pingtung County immerses visitors in Taiwan’s southern charm.

Explore Kenting National Park. At the southern tip of Pingtung County is Kenting National Park, a protected region with white sandy beaches, lush forests and offshore coral reefs waiting to be explored. Gaze up at the 21-metre-high lighthouse of Eluanbi Park, learn about native flora and fauna at the Hengchun Tropical Botanic Garden, then get active while surfing and diving in the surrounding waters.

Visit the National Museum Of Marine Biology And Aquarium. Species from across the globe are showcased at this museum and water park, which lies on the southern outskirts of Checheng Township. See native species from the island’s rivers, intertidal zones and open seas in the Waters of Taiwan exhibit, then stroll through the Coral Kingdom’s underwater tunnel as blacktip reef sharks, butterflyfish and lionfish swim around you.

Learn about Taiwanese folklore at the Donglong Temple. Originally constructed in 1706 during the Qing Dynasty, the Donglong Temple is dedicated to Marshal Wen, a folkloric deity believed to rid the world of evil forces. Marvel at the temple’s golden gate that’s intricately decorated with dragon sculptures and see the depictions of Marshal Wen’s sea expeditions. The triennial Donggang King Boat Ceremony is a must-see, featuring rituals, feasting and boat burning traditions.

Getting around

Pingtung County is around 30 minutes’ drive from Kaohsiung International Airport and is connected to destinations across Taiwan along the Pingtung and South-Link railway lines. Buses are the main means of getting around Pingtung County while ferries travel to Lamay Island. Having your own vehicle gives you greater freedom to explore.
