About Hsinchu County

Things to do in Hsinchu County

One of the oldest cities in Taiwan, Hsinchu City is a fascinating mix of old and new. Stroll around the city to see soaring apartment blocks standing alongside beautifully restored heritage buildings and centuries-old temples. The main shopping district is criss-crossed with canals lined with cafes, restaurants and shops. Head down to the waterfront to stroll along the oceanside promenade and enjoy the breeze.

City God Temple is one of the most important Taoist sites in Taiwan. The ancient temple dates back to 1748 and features intricate wood carvings, mosaics and dragons perched on the rooftop. The front courtyard is filled with food stalls where you can enjoy local delicacies such as oyster omelettes, soup dumplings and beef noodles.

Carved jade furniture, dinosaur skeletons and ivory dragon boats are just some of the treasures on show at Guqifeng Gallery. Located just outside the city centre, this excellent local history museum is worth a trip.

Journeying inland takes you to remote mountain villages such as Smangus and Qingquan. The indigenous hamlets are nestled among soaring peaks and offer an off-the-beaten-track experience. Spend the day hiking in the mountains, then soak your muscles at the blissful Qingquan Hot Springs.

In the south region of the county, Emei Lake is an important reservoir for farmers growing a coveted local tea known as Oriental Beauty. It’s a type of oolong and is known for its light and delicate flavour. The area is dotted with tea houses where you can sip freshly brewed cups of Oriental Beauty and enjoy the scenery.
