About Porvoo

Located 50 kilometres east of Helsinki, Porvoo is the second oldest city in Finland. The city is connected to the Gulf of Finland by the Porvoo River, its red wooden shore houses which line the banks are a draw for many tourists. Visitors can step back in time wandering charming cobbled streets, sample handcrafted chocolates or take an old-fashioned steamboat ride up the river in summertime.

Begin a visit to Porvoo by heading to one of the city’s best-known buildings, Porvoo Cathedral. The cathedral is set right in the heart of Old Porvoo, an idyllic area with an intriguing history. The cathedral belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, the oldest parts dating back to the 13th century. The church was destroyed by fire and attack on several occasions, yet stands today with many original features still available to view. Stroll to the river to view the intriguing wooden buildings. The red shore houses were used to store merchandise brought in from exotic lands. They were painted red to honour Gustav III, the King of Sweden and his arrival into the city. One of the main buildings in the centre of Porvoo is Holm House or museum which hosts exhibitions throughout the year. Visitors can discover how wealthy merchants lived in the city during the 18th century. Passionate foodies will adore the culinary delicacies which Porvoo offers. The city is famous for its cafes and restaurants and is home to chocolate factories which lovingly craft delicious treats unique to the area. The city’s interior design shops are also something to shout about. With styles varying from romantic and antique to contemporary, and state of the art home décor pieces, visitors with an eye for design will be spoilt for choice. Families and nature lovers will adore the variety of activities Porvoo offers. From sailing, fishing and horseback riding to hiking, husky and reindeer safari’s and golf, this city caters to everyone’s needs.

Porvoo is easy to explore on foot, as Porvoo is compact enough not to get lost reaching the main attractions. Day trips are available to and from Helsinki via boat or bus. Between May and September ferry lines operate, the cruise taking 3.5 hours. During summer months, Porvoo Museum Railways operate a vintage train from Kerava to Porvoo. By car, Porvoo can be reached from Helsinki in around 45 minutes.

Finland’s second most historical city has been in existence since the 13th century, although many of the buildings were constructed much later. The old cobbled streets, colourful buildings and riverside location makes for a charming summer destination for both Finns and tourists.
