Surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, Rasnov is intersected by the River Ghimbasel, which meanders past a medieval fortress and 16th-century murals reflecting centuries of art, culture and religion. Visitors also come to Rasnov for hiking, cave exploration and horseback riding in nearby mountains and gorges.
Things to do in Râşnov
Rasnov Fortress was built at least 500 years ago by Teutonic knights. Stroll the galleys and watchtowers and keep an eye out for tournaments and sword-fighting demonstrations. You can also try archery or pick up souvenirs and art from dozens of craft stalls.
Pop into the Evangelical Church to see ancient Gothic architecture, then explore Valea Cetatii Cave. You’ll find a trail to an underground cave system within the Valea Cetatii Nature Preserve. Make your way to a cluster of lakes surrounding Cathedral Hall to see sparkling reflections of arches and calcite formations.
Thrill-seeking travellers can visit Rasnoavei Gorge for bungee jumping, rappelling and ATV excursions. You can also take guided horseback rides at Diana Riding Center. If visiting in winter, take a cable car up for skiing or snowboarding at Postavarul.
